Focusing on Willy Brandt as an example, this article approaches German and US foreign policies through the perspective of transnational media history. How did the “special relationship” with the USA influence the style of media representation and politics in the Federal Republic of Germany? First, the article reconstructs the news-paper reports of Brandt’s visits to the USA and the images resulting from them. Second, the analysis traces the American influences on Brandt’s political and media styles with special emphasis on John F. Kennedy as a role model. The main focus of the discussion lies on the phase from 1958 to 1961.
